Of the many great British recipes to experiment with, one for scones is a wonderful choice. Why? One reason is that scones are a typical British side dish and snack. But also they can be easy enough for even the most beginner cooks!

Scones make excellent additions to meals or even a small breakfast. This basic British scone recipe is one of the simplest out there. The ingredients are easy to come by and the results are delicious! Best of all, this recipe makes a full dozen scones, which makes it a great option for larger events.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup of margarine
  • 1/8 cup of white sugar
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • Parchment paper (Technically, this isn't an ingredient, but rather a recommended tool)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  2. For best results line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you do not have parchment paper, you can simply grease the baking sheet, but the scones may not turn out as well.
  3. Carefully sift/mix the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl.
  4. Rub in the margarine until the mixture clumps into fine chunks.
  5. Stir in the sugar.
  6. Slowly mix in the milk until a soft dough is formed.
  7. Flour a surface or counter.
  8. Place the dough on the floured surface and knead it gently.

    Cut into two-inch circles.

  9. Roll the dough out until it is 3/4 of an inch thick.
  10. Cut into two-inch circles.
  11. Place on the baking sheet.
  12. Brush with lightly with milk.
  13. Bake for approximately 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Tips and Tricks:

  • In order to make it easier to form the individual scones, consider using a round cookie cutter.
  • You could also make smaller sized scones if you wish, but keep in mind that that may impact overall cook time.
  • Serve with butter or/and jelly.
  • This recipe is easy to customize, feel free to add blueberries, cranberries,raisins or candied ginger. Some people add cinnamon as well.
  • Be sure to add the milk SLOWLY. You do not want to end up with dough that is too soupy.
