The story behind Greek Cuisine

How did Greek cuisine come to consist of all of those above foods? Greek cuisine was based on its geography and climate. Ancient Greek cuisine consisted of a 'Mediterranean Triad' of wheat, olive oil, and wine. During this time, meat was rarely eaten, fish was much more common.

Olive oil was a common component because of the widespread olive trees found all throughout Greece. The olive oil is part of what gives Greek food the distinctive taste it has.

Wheat is the main grain used in Greek food. Barley was also grown, but wheat was much more common. Similarly, the climate and geography of Greece made raising sheep and goats much more common than cattle. This meant that goat milk and cheese was more often a component of Greek cuisine.
